Living Without Regret – Two Valuable Life Lessons

A Wise Women’s Legacy

When I was a young girl my grandmother, who was in her late 80s at that stage, taught me an important life lesson.  She told me that she was ready for God to take her whenever he was ready, because she’d had a full life.

She then talked about various experiences in her life which she cherished, including growing up in a large family, being part of musical gatherings and performances, amazing historical changes (she lived from 1893-1993), practical jokes with friends and family, having children, grandchildren, (and later great great grandchildren) … I could hear, see and feel that she was fulfilled. I thought WOW! that’s how I want to be at her age.  She lived to the ripe old age of 100!

I was inspired to be like her, to live a life without regret.  So I decided that, however long or short my life was, that I would do all the things I wanted to do.  I wanted to be able to look back over my life without regret.

The Planned Combie Van Trip

This lesson was reinforced to me in my early 20s.  My Uncle Graham (my grandmothers oldest son) decided that he would travel around Australia in a combie van.  He set about converting the van for housing himself, and for the rugged countryside he would come across along the way.  Having grown up in the country himself, he knew that he and the vehicle had to be well prepared.  Something happened and he delayed doing the trip.  Some time later he again prepared to do his cherished trip.  Then, as the starting date was looming closer, he was sent to hospital to have a gallstone removed.

My uncle awoke from the gallstone operation to be told that they had discovered cancer in his bowel, and that he now had a colostomy bag.  Later they discovered secondary cancer, and soon afterwards they found that his body was riddled with cancer.  He never did get to go on that trip, and regretted that he hadn’t been able to fulfill his dream.  “

Valuable Life Lessons

I’m grateful to My grandmother and uncle for teaching me this valuable lesson.  They both developed my understanding about the importance of living life to the fullest.  Taking advantage of the pleasures and opportunities as they appear each day is a key ingredient to living life without regret.
